This immersive workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore diverse styles of powwow dance from a celebrated Fancy Dancer, hip hop artist and member of the Crow Nation.
Have you ever been curious about powwow dancing and its rich cultural traditions? This workshop is a wonderful opportunity to learn and engage! Join Christian Takes Gun Parrish, aka Supaman, for an immersive experience exploring the diverse styles of powwow dance. Discover the origins, meanings, and movements behind dances such as the Men's Fancy War Dance, Grass Dance, Chicken Dance, and Traditional Dance. You'll not only hear the unique songs that accompany each style, but also have the chance to learn the steps and try the dances for yourself.
Students will have the chance to learn the steps and try the dances for themselves in a manner that honors the cultural tradition. The workshop welcomes participants of all backgrounds and experience levels. All are welcome—come with an open heart and a willingness to move!
Supaman aka Christian Takes Gun Parrish, is a Native American dancer and innovative hip hop artist (Apsaalooke Nation) who has dedicated his life to empowering and spreading a message of hope, pride and resilience through his original performances and outreach programs. Supaman's one-of-a-kind presentation combines Native culture, comedy and urban hip hop culture which dazzles audiences and captivates listeners. His uncanny ability to motivate, encourage, and inspire through dance and hip hop music keeps him at the forefront among his contemporaries, giving him a platform to educate on Indigenous issues while connecting with people from all walks of life.
His impressive list of accolades includes the 2017 MTV VMA Award for "Best Fight Against the System," multiple Nammy "Native American Music Awards," "North American Indigenous Image Awards," and seven "Tunney Awards." He was awarded "The Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Award" in Canada for best video and was voted MTV's New Artist of the Week. In 2018, Supaman won Best Hip Hop Album and Best Producer at the Indigenous Music Awards. His videos have received millions of views on YouTube and Facebook, putting him in high demand for tours throughout the U.S.A. and internationally.
