Will poles make me faster?
What are the benefits of poles?

Types available from JTP
•	Carbon: Lightweight, telescopic, suitable for runners
•	Suspension: Slightly heavier but has springs that absorb the shock - each placement is softer landing for your wrists/elbows/shoulders – more suitable for elderly and walkers

Proper Grip and Setup
•	The Straps: Put your hand up through the bottom of the loop, then grab the handle. This lets you push down your weight using the strap while keeping your hand relaxed. And you won’t lose your pole over the edge if you let go and have to grab a rail suddenly
•	Pole Height: Stand with your arms relaxed at a 90-degree angle. A good rule of thumb for sizing is your height multiplied by 0.68

Uphill Techniques
•	Diagonal Poling (Moderate Climbs): Move your opposite arm and leg together. Plant the right pole when your left foot steps forward, and push back on the rear foot and pole as you move. IE to PUSH yourself up the hill, rather than pull.
•	Double Poling (Steep Climbs): Shorten poles. Plant both poles together beside and slightly in front of you. Lean your weight slightly forward and push down with both arms to power up large steps. This is more of a pull up motion.
•	Placement: Keep pole plants close to your body. Avoid reaching too far forward, which strains your arms and wastes energy.

Downhills and Flats
•	Descents (lean your balanced forward): Lengthen poles, shorten your reach, and plant poles just ahead for balance. Take your hands out of the straps on technical or steep rocky descents so you can drop the poles instantly if you trip.
•	Flats for Walkers: Walkers will still use following your normal arm movement and stride, but ensuring the tips always land slightly behind you.
•	Runners:
o	Either hold by the very middle and simply carry horizontally while you run with normal arm movement
o	Run with the poles trailing at the back, very lightly touching at the rear as the arm moves backward naturally following your run stride

Storage – Tie some short pieces of bungy cord onto the back of your Hydration Pack, upper and lower, to attach your poles to your pack when not in use.

Warning - Stay clear of bridges with slats, wire, rocks, or roots where tips can get stuck and snap (or pull you off the edge!!).

Main Types of Pole Tips
•	Carbide / Tungsten Tips: These are the standard, sharp metal tips built into the base of most trail poles. They provide maximum bite on rock, ice, packed dirt, and gravel. They will scratch rock surfaces and make a metallic clicking noise.
•	Rubber Tips / Caps: These slip over the carbide tips. They are designed for pavement, asphalt, and indoor use to provide traction, dampen vibration, and eliminate noise. They also protect fragile trails and rock formations from erosion.
•	Mud / Trekking Baskets: Small, plastic, star-shaped discs that screw on just above the metal tip. They prevent the pole from sinking too deep into soft
