Recovery Street is a moving journey of courage, hope, and aroha against all odds.
On this stage, people who have walked through the darkness of addiction and mental health struggles step forward to share their truths.
Their stories are real, powerful, and deeply human. Their life journeys stand as inspiring examples that the past does not define the future.
At the heart of this kaupapa is the whakataukī “Hoki ki tōu maunga, kia purea ai koe e ngā hau a Tāwhirimātea” which means return to your mountain so you may be cleansed by the winds of Tāwhirimātea. It is a call to reconnect and to embrace the healing that is available through whakapapa, whenua, and whānau.
Born from a 14-week healing programme, Recovery Street is both a performance and a testament to the power of art, therapy, and community. Guided by skilled artists and therapists, participants present their personal pūrākau, transforming pain into expression through storytelling, drama, waiata, haka, and narrative therapy.
The courage to share one’s story inspires others to begin their own journey of healing.
