How can internationals in Denmark actively participate in shaping the society they live in?
As an EU citizen, you have the right to vote and run in local elections, including the upcoming municipal and regional elections on November 18. You can also participate in European Citizens’ Initiatives and engage in public debate.
For international residents from outside the EU, there are great opportunities to take part in local democratic life—through associations, public discussions, and community networks.
Join us for an engaging afternoon at Roskilde Library exploring how participatory democracy works in practice!
Speaker: Author and PhD. Oksana Didyk will explore:
• The rising threats to democracy in Europe, from populism to extremism.
• Why democracy must be seen as a shared international value, not just a national project.
• Denmark’s long-standing tradition of civic participation and dialogue.
• How Denmark — through its EU Presidency and international engagement — can play a leading role in strengthening democratic resilience.
Moderator: Bernardo Basilici Menini, Editor-in-Chief, The Copenhagen Post
Bernardo will guide the discussion and introduce the theme “How to engage in participatory democracy as an international” — highlighting practical ways internationals in Denmark can take part in civic life, from voting in local elections to joining public debates and community initiatives.
There will be time for questions and dialogue with the audience. And after the debate, you will have a chance to talk with other internationals and the organizers with some refreshments; beer, soda and pizza.
