- **Event Description**: FREE FOUL-WEATHER WILDERNESS SURVIVAL CLASS &gt;&gt; November 8-9, 2025 (Roscommon, Michigan • Crawford County • Northern Lower Peninsula): Taught by Team MibSAR’s Long Range Special Operations Group (LRSOG) instructor cadre, this ADULTS-ONLY class will be held at the Michigan DNR’s spotless, state-of-the-art, Ralph A. MacMullan (RAM) Conference Center in the Education Building, Lower Level Conference Room, 104 Conservation Drive, Roscommon, Michigan www.Michigan.gov/RAMcenter

&gt;&gt; CLASS CURRICULUM: This 50% classroom, 50% dirt-time class will help you learn -- or hone -- several essential foul-weather survival skills, including: 
• Edible-medicinal plant/tree identification (4 hours): after classroom discussion, you’ll search for edibles/medicinals in the bush with a guide
• The world’s most useful knots for the outdoors (2 hours): hands-on knot-tying practice (participants must have two, six-foot lengths of 1/4-inch-diameter rope, different colors helpful)
• Water-repellent, heavily-insulated brush huts (4 hours): after classroom discussion, hands-on build in bush, plus optional Saturday-night bivouac in your own brush hut in SOG instructors’ bush camp (participants must have two, 55-gallon contractor grade garbage bags)
• Wet-log fires without matches, saw, ax (4 hours): after classroom discussion, hands-on baton-splitting of logs into fuelwood, kindling, and tinder with bowie knife; ignition with magnesium tinder bar, ferro sparking rod, scraper/striker (participants must have gloves and safety glasses; all other equipment provided, or use your own)
• Night navigation (2 hours): optional all-in-the-bush, Saturday-night practice on compass course with guides (must have own compass, headlamp, safety glasses)

&gt;&gt; EQUIPMENT TO BRING
&gt; Warm clothing: synthetic or wool long underwear (1 pair pants, several shirts), insulated parka, insulated pants, insulated boots, mittens, warm hat, etc., for multi-hour outside portions of class — avoid cotton, if possible, as it the Devil’s Cloth when wet
&gt; Safety glasses for eye protection when processing firewood with fixed-blade knife (provided) and baton (improvised on-site); starting a fire with a metal scraper (provided), magnesium tinder rod (provided), petroleum-infused cotton balls (provided), and ferro rod (provided); and survival shelter construction
&gt; Leather gloves for hand protection when processing firewood, starting a fire, and survival  shelter construction
&gt; Closed-cell sitting and kneeling pad for firewood processing and fire building on frozen, snowy, damp, or muddy ground
&gt; Daypack (lined with a water-proof garbage bag to keep contents dry) containing rain pants and jacket, extra warm clothing, snacks, water bottle, first-aid kit, survival kit, toilet paper in plastic bag, flashlight, extra battery, etc. (for use when we travel away from classroom area to build fires &amp; survival shelters in woods).
&gt; Snow shovel in case the area receives enough snow for us to build snow shelters
&gt; Portable folding chair for field portions of class (optional)
&gt; COVID-19 facemask (optional)
&gt; Hand sanitizer (optional)

EQUIPMENT FOR OPTIONAL OVERNIGHT IN SURVIVAL SHELTER WITH INSTRUCTOR: If participants want to try spending a night in the instructor’s bush camp* (adjacent to vehicles) in either one of the brush huts or tarp shelters built during the class, they should also bring
&gt; One or two warm sleeping bags that will keep them warm down to 20° Fahrenheit, the average low temp in the Au Sabler State Forest for mid-November, in case they are not warm enough in their brush hut, of it they bivouac under a tarp
&gt; Two full-length, closed-cell-foam sleeping pads
&gt; A headlamp and small flashlight, with spare batteries for both
&gt; TWO 8- by 10-foot lightweight (standard-duty) PVC tarps ($5 to $10 each). One to rig as a lean-to or cover a leaky brush hut, and the other to protect the sleep system with half under the sleeping pad and bag as a ground cloth, and the other half over their sleeping bag if ground and vegetation is damp or snowy, or the wind is pushing mist or snow into shelter
&gt; 10, 8-foot-long pieces of 1/8-inch-diameter cordage for rigging lean-to
* No camping is permitted within one mile of the RAM Center, so no tents, hammocks, or sleeping in vehicles is permitted, just the survival shelters associated with the class. A pit toilet is located at the nearby firearms range.

EQUIPMENT FOR OPTIONAL 2-HOUR SATURDAY NIGHT LAND NAVIGATION COURSE WITH INSTRUCTOR: If participants of any skill level (instruction provided) want to practice navigating a small orienteering course at night, with an instructor, they should bring:
&gt; Safety glasses
&gt; A headlamp and small flashlight, with spare batteries for both
&gt; A pocket-sized note pad, or a few pieces of folded paper
&gt; A pencil
&gt; Night-nav-enabled compasses will be provided, or use your own if it has luminous features
