Join us at the Romeoville Branch Library on the second Tuesday evening of most months for a spirited book discussion and light refreshments including a choice of beer, wine or a non alcoholic beverage.
This month's title is The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson.
"The Devil in the White City tells the story of two men whose fates parallel one another's in the years surrounding the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Architect Daniel H. Burnham led the team of designers, architects, and engineers who created the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. While Daniel Burnham toiled to bring the White City to Chicago, another man created a darker legacy. H. H. Holmes, a handsome and engaging young doctor, built a hotel just a short train ride away from the World's Fair. Holmes' hotel became the last known location of many young women who came to Chicago to see the fair and mysteriously disappeared.
The Devil in the White City draws the reader into the enchantment of the Guilded Age, made all the more appealing by a supporting cast of real-life characters, including Buffalo Bill, Theodore Dreiser, Susan B. Anthony, Thomas Edison, Archduke Francis Ferdinand, and others. Erik Larson’s gifts as a storyteller are magnificently displayed in this rich narrative of the master builder, the killer, and the great fair that obsessed them both."
This book will be available one month prior to the discussion and can be picked up at the Romeoville Branch Library's Adult Services Desk and will be due back one week after the book club date.
