Rome: Beauty, Religion and Power in the 17th Century
Religious turmoil in the heart of Europe and its impact upon art of seventeenth century Rome. This period saw the hallmarks of religious fervour and anxiety: for example, celebration of martyrdom (e.g. San Stefano) combined with a marked step change in style which is seen as excessive and overblown, particularly after the refinement of the Renaissance period. This tour looks at the painters and architects who represent the various styles of the Baroque in religious and secular sites. Examines the religious background and context through visits to the churches of the newly formed religious orders and reveals how the leading families used art to aggrandize themselves in visits to their palaces.
