On Thursday, February 26th at 4:30 p.m., we cordially invite you to the Angelicum for a public lecture by Professor Alexander Kornoukhov (Georgia), titled "The Contemporary Artist in the Church: the Redemptoris Mater Chapel in the Vatican." 

Our Guest Speaker will present the story of the creation, as well as the theological and artistic program of the monumental mosaic depicting the Heavenly Jerusalem, which he designed and executed in the years 1996-1998 on the walls of the Redemptoris Mater Chapel in the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City. Drawing from his experience as the artist involved in this unique project, we will explore how theology, liturgy, and sacred art come together in the iconographic vision of the chapel. The lecture will also analyze the crisis and possibility of contemporary sacred art through notions such as “connection to place,” “responsibility in time,” and the tension between “reality-as-doctrine” and “mysterium reality.”

Alexander Kornoukhov is a Christian Orthodox artist and a master of mosaic. After beginning his career as a secular artist, he later devoted himself to sacred art, developing a distinctive style that combines an almost experimental artistic freedom with a rigorous, scholarly grounding in Christian tradition. His works are found in churches across Europe, including Georgia, Italy, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, as well as at the Vatican. His most renowned work remains the mosaic in the Redemptoris Mater Chapel, which was commissioned by Pope John Paul II in preparation for the Great Jubilee of 2000.

Giovedì 26 febbraio alle ore 16:30, vi invitiamo cordialmente all'Angelicum per una conferenza pubblica del professor Alexander Kornoukhov (Georgia), dal titolo “L'artista contemporaneo nella Chiesa: la Cappella Redemptoris Mater in Vaticano”. 

Il nostro Ospite presenterà il programma teologico e artistico del monumentale mosaico raffigurante la Nuova Gerusalemme nella Cappella Redemptoris Mater, da lui progettato e realizzato. Attingendo alla sua esperienza di artista coinvolto in questo progetto unico, esploreremo come la teologia, la liturgia e l'arte sacra si fondono nella visione iconografica della cappella. La conferenza analizzerà anche la crisi e le possibilità dell'arte sacra contemporanea attraverso nozioni quali “connessione con il luogo”, “responsabilità nel tempo” e la tensione tra “realtà come dottrina” e “realtà come mistero”.

Alexander Kornoukhov è un artista cristiano ortodosso e maestro di mosaico. Dopo aver iniziato la sua carriera come artista secolare, si è poi dedicato all'arte sacra, sviluppando uno stile distintivo che combina una libertà artistica quasi sperimentale con una rigorosa base accademica nella tradizione cristiana. Le sue opere si trovano in chiese di tutta Europa, tra cui Georgia, Italia, Polonia, Russia e Vaticano. La sua opera più famosa è il mosaico sulla parete principale della Cappella Redemptoris Mater nel Palazzo Apostolico in Vaticano, commissionato da Papa Giovanni Paolo II in preparazione al Grande Giubileo del 2000.
