- **Event Description**: Join us for our monthly meeting with a great speaker, Jim Guldin and his talk, "The Fate of Shortleaf Pine Forests in the Missouri Ozarks." You do not have to be a member to attend.

Jim Guldin is a retired research scientist in forest ecology and silviculture, and lives in Springfield Missouri. He has degrees in Forest Science from Penn State, Yale, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He served on the faculty of the School of Forest Resources at the University of Arkansas at Monticello from 1982-1992, and then spent 28 years as a research scientist, Project Leader, and Center Director with the Southern Research Station of the USDA Forest Service, stationed in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

The presentation discusses the harvests of virgin shortleaf pine forests in the Missouri Ozarks from 1880-1920, from the perspective of the the three-month visit in the spring of 1907 by the Yale Forest School to the Missouri Lumber and Mining Company (MLM),  which operated a large sawmill at Grandin and drew sawlogs from more than six counties in the Missouri Ozarks. Three historical accounts (one from MLM and two from Yale students) give an interesting perspective of the Yale 1907 visit to Shannon and Carter counties. At the end of the presentation, some brief perspective on the future opportunities and challenges for shortleaf pine restoration and management in Missouri will be offered, based on the author’s personal observations spanning four decades in southern pine forestry research.
