We value your time, expertise, and commitment and want to be fully transparent about a situation that has arisen with our original venue.It has come to our attention that there exists an ongoing labor dispute between the Marriott North Bethesda Conference Center and Unite Here Local 25, the Hotel, Restaurant, and Casino Workers Union in the DC Metro area. Simply stated, the County owns the Conference Center and Marriott is the manager, by contract. While we are not a party to this dispute and have no role in its origins or resolution, the conflict remains unresolved and has escalated in ways that directly affect our event planning.In particular, over the past several weeks, two individuals identifying themselves as union “campaign researchers” have repeatedly engaged with our organization in ways we consider intrusive and harassing. Despite our attempts to manage these interactions professionally and constructively, their conduct has continued and, in our judgment, has crossed the line into unacceptable behavior.Our foremost responsibility is to ensure the safety, security, and comfort of everyone associated with the Summit—our speakers, panelists, moderators, attendees, staff, and Board members. After careful consideration, our Board and leadership team have determined that proceeding at the Marriott North Bethesda Conference Center would jeopardize the orderly and respectful environment essential for our program.As you know, the Affordable Housing Conference is a mission‑driven, nonprofit organization devoted to advancing safe, decent, and affordable housing and fostering constructive collaboration among residents, advocates, public officials, and community partners. The current situation runs directly counter to the values of respect, inclusion, and constructive engagement that our Summit is designed to promote. Our goal is to create a space where difficult issues can be addressed thoughtfully and collaboratively, and not overshadowed by external conflicts that distract from our core mission of preserving, maintaining, and creating affordable housing for everyone.For these reasons, we have made the difficult decision to change both the venue and the date of the Summit. This decision was not taken lightly. We recognize the inconvenience that any modification may cause for your schedule, especially given the time and preparation you are investing in your participation. At the same time, we believe that relocating the event and adjusting the timeline is the most responsible course of action to protect the integrity of the Summit and the well‑being of everyone involved.We want to emphasize that this change is through no fault of our own, nor of any Summit participant. It is solely a response to the external circumstances created by the unresolved labor dispute and the associated conduct we have experienced. Our goal is to shield you and all attendees from being drawn into a conflict unrelated to the purpose of our gathering.Please stay tuned. We're working to finalize a new venue that will host the Summit in a secure, neutral, and professional setting and to confirm a revised date that preserves as much of the original program as possible. Our strong hope and intention are that you will still be able to participate under these updated arrangements.We will follow up as soon as possible with the new Summit date and location and any adjustments to the program schedule.
