Artists & Makers Studios Welcomes
Curator Zsudayka Nzinga Terrell and
“Rendering the Invisible”
Mini-Solo for Amy Rice

(Rockville, MD) – Artists & Makers Studios is pleased to host Zsudayka Nzinga Terrell for the month of July. The exhibit will run from July 1st through July 30th, with a First Friday opening on July 10th from 5-8pm. Over the last year, the art scene has been under siege by the United States Presidential administration. Art funding has been stripped from institutions that host exhibitions featuring works by Black artists, LGBTQ+-identified artists, immigrants, first-generation American citizens, women, and more. Many of these shows have been replaced by calls for art examining the 250th anniversary of America, but in a sanitized form. We are being asked to look at Thomas Jefferson, for example, not as a complicated figure, but just as a wonderful man. This scrubbing and repurposing of American history flies in the face of the idea that we are a melting pot country, full of diversity. Rendering the Invisible is an opportunity for artists to address the erasure of the current calls for art. Through photography, sculpture, painting, mixed media, and installation, the 30 artists take space to tell stories that have been left out of the conversations about who is American and what that means.

Curated by Zsudayka Nzinga Terrell, this exhibition places narratives that are often separated in exhibitions in direct conversation. Drawing on a concept in Irving Wheeler’s book, “In Open Contempt,” Terrell positioned images that tell stories that have been actively suppressed in art spaces for highlighting diverse American experiences. Weathersby argues that by focusing on these narratives, we actively pull the suppressed, erased histories out of forced invisibility.

Stepping outside her usual curatorial focus on Black American artists, Terrell sets out to redefine how we engage with our American identities and experiences from a place of togetherness, against the grain of the divisiveness this administration has encouraged. This exhibition features DC area artists, Quaran Ahmad, Tiya Ayele, D’Mia Britton, Yaa Bonner, Ashlee Brown, Caitie Curtis, Anna U Davis, Riya Devi-Ashby, Jay Durrah, Cameron Felton, Angela Franklin, Mahalia Giesselmann, Deborah Grayson, Ashley Ja’nae Gunter, Adar Howard, Leigh Bell-Koch, Jo Lewis, Leah Lowery, Dunnie Onasanya, Annika Papke, Electra Pelias, Genevieve Phelps, Autumn Spears, Elyse Spencer, Fahtimah Tolbert, Itayu Torres Martinez, Aaron Uzzle, Neysa Wellington, and Jazz Williams. Amy Rice shares a mini-solo exhibit in the Lounge Gallery and Resident Artists exhibit in the Gallery Hall. Enjoy the sculptural work of Francis Maduka Uduh in studio 11, along with nineteen Gallery 209 Member Artists exhibiting their latest work. Collect a handmade piece of art and support local working artists, makers, and professionals. Light fare generously sponsored each month by The Chesapeake Framing Company.
