- **Event Description**: Join us at PAWA Paints North Cascades for an epic in-person paint party filled with colors and fun!About this EventThis event is for PAWA members only. If you are not a member you can join at Facilitator: Jenny KinbergEmail:studiokinberg@gmail.com Cell Phone: +1(541)297 6271PAWA Paints North CascadesJoin us at PAWA Paints North Cascades with its majestic mountains and turquoise glacial lakes. The scenery here is so beautiful and wild. With its big valleys, high ridges, beautiful green rivers, and stunning jade green lakes, North Cascades national park is a plein air painters dream.Day 1 Meeting location, date and time10am on Thursday june 18. Diablo Lake Vista Point .Diablo Lake Vista Point is overlooking the gorgeous lake, The colors are ever changing. Sometimes bright emerald, sometimes an opaque milky jade, and other times dark with sapphire tones. Very easy place to park and see incredible lake views. Has bathrooms and picnic tables. No cell reception but you can’t miss us, just look for us setting up to paint.Day 1 Lunch plans- Bring your paintings at lunch time to share, bring sack lunch or restaurant/grocery suggestions:Lunch :There are picnic tables in the overlook parking area, we will eat around 12:30, bring a sack lunch. Grocery store, nearest ones are in Winthrop and Concrete so stop there on the way up. There is no way to easily get to one once you are here, so pack a lunch all the days. Restaurants- most of them are in Winthrop or Concrete. No cell service so plan accordingly. Paper and/or downloaded map recommended.Day 1 After lunch, if a new location, time and what is there:The wind often picks up in the afternoon so we will likely head down to the lake side at North Cascades Environmental Institute. There is lake shore access and little trails that go around the buildings with intimate lake views. Bathrooms are blue porta potties there. To get to the environmental center follow the signs and it will have you cross a dam before you get to the parking. If the gate is locked (sometimes it is) then the next best place to get to the lake is the boat access area near Colonial Creek campground. Colonial Creek campground has free parking at the very back of the campground (south side of the road). Also on the north side of the highway is an open area along the road to park if not too busy. You can walk out the beach for some painting.Day 1 End of day planDinner will be on your own as we will be spread out over various campgrounds or Airbnbs in this area which has no phone reception. Please take pictures of your paintings and post them for Pawa members to view on our Facebook group page.Day 2 Meeting location, date and time10am on Friday June 19Washington Pass overlook. If you don’t see us unloading in the parking lot, walk out onto the short paved trail and you will find us setting up along there. Overlook at Washington Pass has a short, 400ft in length, level paved trail to great views. Spectacular view of massive Liberty Bell Mountain and Early Winters Spires. Also great gnarly trees. ;) Has bathrooms and picnic tables.Day 2 Lunch plans-Bring your paintings at lunch time to sharering, bring sack lunch or restaurant/grocery suggestionsThere are picnic tables in the overlook parking area, we will eat around 12:30, bring a sack lunch.Day 2 After lunch, if a new location, time and what is thereAfter lunch break, you are free to start another painting in the vicinity or go down the road heading east on highway 20, there are pullouts that have incredible views of the glacier valley, and the road has excessively wide shoulders and pullouts, as you can see in the second photo.Day 2 End of day planDinner will be on your own as we will likely be spread out over various campgrounds or airbnbs in this area which has no phone reception. There are many good places to eat in Winthrop. My favorite is Rocking horse bakery for coffee and quiches. The general store at Mazama has really good baguettes- you will definitely want to stop and get one when you go by.Please take pictures of your paintings as you finish them in the field and after you return to civilization post them to our facebook group page or instagram with the hashtag #pleinairwashingtonartistsRecommended lodging/camping (even for one-day events):Campgrounds on the west side of the pass have reservations system up, there are a few and the closest is Colonial Creek campground. Newhalem is lower elevation so the facilitator will be staying there. Those on the west side have toilets and water but no showers. On the east side there is a KOA campground in Winthrop, and camping at Pearrygin state park nearby Winthrop. Pearrygin is pretty nice and has showers. For people who don’t want to sleep in a tent there are many Airbnbs, the closest are in the towns of Mazama and Winthrop.Note Heading west from Winthrop to Washington Pass takes about 40 minutes to drive so factor that in if you are staying in Winthrop…however it definitely has the best options for the area.Getting your lodging reservations early -think January/Feburary- strongly recommended for any of these.Other notes about this event - include parking info, whether a pass is needed, restrictions, how to spot you, etc:Passes/permits - No national park pass fee or permit needed, it’s free! However Northwest forest pass is required at many places East of Ross Lake. So once you pass the Ross Lake overlooks be on the lookout when you park at other locations going east. It appears that it may not be needed at Washington Pass overlook, but I’d bring one just in case. Northwest forest passes can be bought online or at many outdoor stores such as REI.No entrance with a ranger to hand you a map either, so if you want one the best places are coming from the west/I5 are:North cascades visitor center by Newhalem or Wilderness information center in Marblemount.Important: GAS- Coming from the east, Mazama is last place to get anything like food or gas for 60 miles. Coming from the west, Concrete is the last place to get gas or any other supplies.About hiking or other places to paint-there are many short(ish) day hikes with great views, this is one of the shortest- Blue Lake trail 4.6 miles RT 915 feet elevation gain - this one is really close to Washington Pass. There may be snow/ice in the shaded areas at the top so plan for that if you decide to go up. We take micro spikes and poles along if it is reported to be present. There are also nice well maintained flat trails down by Newhalem in the forest along the river. To go there park in the tiny town of Newhalem go towards the river and walk out across the footbridge. You can also ask the visitors center right there how to get to the “Trail of the Cedars”. Another option is the Thunder Knob trail (accessed from Colonial North campground), short but all uphill. For more info on any of these (such as specific directions, etc) look up on http://www.wta.orgFor other painting places that you can drive to- there are some great views of the methow valley and cute ranch barns/farms in the Mazama and Winthrop area, some of them from the main highway but the side roads are great to explore as well. Lost River Road going up the Methow River valley in Mazama is beautiful. The walkway by the river in Winthrop is also nice. https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events3/banners/213ec8e0-f44c-11f0-939d-8d7f4fe5e3ad-rimg-w1114-h740-dc2d312c-gmir.jpg
