Join us for an afternoon of poetry with Ed Madden! As our featured guest, Ed will present work from his book, A pooka in Arkansas (The Word Works 2023). After the featured presentation, we will break for refreshments, book sales, and socializing. All guests are invited to share for the open reading to follow!

Ed Madden is a professor of English and former director of Women's and Gender Studies at the University of South Carolina. He is the author of six books of poetry, most recently A pooka in Arkansas (The Word Works 2023), winner of the 2022 Hilary Tham Capital Collection prize, and six chapbooks, most recently Arkansas Luggage (Squares & Rebels 2025), a hybrid collection of essays and poems published in the Chaps series of writing by gay poets. He also recently published A Story of the City (Muddy Ford 2023), a collection of poems from his eight years of service as the inaugural poet laureate for the City of Columbia, 2015-2022. He is recipient of artist's residencies at the Instituto Sacatar in Brazil and the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Ireland, as well as a 2022 SC Governor's Award for the Arts. In 2025, Madden was named the Carolina Trustees Professor in Humanities, Social Sciences, Business, and Law by the USC Board of Trustees.
