A Wellness Wednesday yoga and reflective writing experience with Anderson "Poetically Undefined" Allen.
ALL BODIES AND ALL LEVELS WELCOME!
SPRING DATES: March 16 - May 18, 2022
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Scribe and Move is a yoga and reflective writing experience that actively uses both mind and body to engage the spirit. Each session will be guided by foundational principles from the Yoga Sutras, various forms of meditation, or may be led by a single word or mantra to explore the symbiotic relationship between body movement and the word.
Simply put, we'll use the word to guide us to movement and allow the movement to inspire our words.
45 minute themed yoga practice followed by a 45 minute reflective writing session inspired by your yoga practice.
*Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a journal or notebook. Sanitized mats are available. Social distance encouraged.
FREE. Open to public. Donations always welcome!
RSVP and masks required entering the for all. Please do not come to class if you feel sick or have been in contact with anyone with a positive COVID case. Thank you for help keeping us safe and open to all.
ABOUT THE SPACE:
The Avenue is fully accessible by wheelchair throughout space and through front door (door is manually operated but receptionist present at all times to assist). We are a volunteer space and very sorry we do not have ASL interpreters on staff. We will do our best to contract interpreters if you don't mind giving us a little notice.
We don't expect everyone to know everything, we lovingly encourage openness and understanding.
*Scribe & Move is a Wellness Wednesday program generously supported by the Greater Rochester Health Foundation and our wonderful community partners at Yoga 4 a Good Hood, Ubuntu Village Networks and the Black Healers Network.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Anderson “Poetically Undefined” Allen is a spoken wordsmith, slam poet, actor, mentor, yogi, and teaching artist based in Rochester, NY.
Anderson is a certified RYT-200 HR yoga instructor and graduate of Yoga 4 A Good Hood's Teacher Training Program. Anderson's yoga practice is rooted in gentle power fusing Vinyasa and Ashtanga yoga to create harmony between flow and stillness. Anderson's personal practice affirms and invites all different bodies as they cultivate their own yoga journey.
Anderson is the co-author of several productions, including the critically acclaimed Anatomy of a Black Man and 12 Dollars, featured at Keybank Rochester Fringe Festival. He launched his career as a professional writer and performer in 2014 after participating in an open mic hosted by Rochester’s only adult poetry slam team, Roc Bottom Slam Team (RBS), where he later serve as Creative Director. Anderson is currently an artist mentor for The Avenue Children's Theatre Project's ACT UP! program that offers writing and performance workshops.
As a teaching artist, Anderson uses his craft as a tool to build community and enrich the lives of young people so they are encouraged to use their art as a form of resistance and radical self-love.
Anderson’s honors include the 2019 TANYS Award for Excellence in Acting, a 2018 Writers & Books Big Pencil Award for inspiring the creation and appreciation of literature as a teacher of youth, a 2018 ESTA Festival Outstanding Actor Award, 2017 TANYS Award for outstanding acting, 2nd place winner of the 2017 Individual QEW International Poetry Slam, a featured speaker at TEDxAllendaleColumbia, Best Male Poet 2016 Roc Awardee. Anderson is currently an Artist-in-Residence at The Avenue Blackbox Theatre.
