Long before Nashville knew his name, Don Potter was captivating audiences in upstate New York. A native of Glens Falls, he first made his mark on the Rochester music scene during the late 1960s as a member of the popular Show Stoppers before joining forces with fellow musician Bat McGrath. Their partnership led to collaborations with Chuck Mangione, including the landmark Friends and Love concert alongside Steve Gadd, Stanley Watson, Tony Levin, and Gap Mangione. Potter's distinctive voice would later be featured on additional Mangione recordings, including the acclaimed Children of Sanchez.
A gifted singer, songwriter, and guitarist, Potter released two solo albums before moving to Nashville, where his career took an extraordinary turn. As a producer, arranger, guitarist, and mentor, he helped shape the signature acoustic sound that launched The Judds to international stardom, earning the mother-daughter duo millions of fans around the world. He has also devoted decades to writing, recording, and performing inspirational and Christian music.
Throughout his remarkable career, Potter has contributed his talents as a guitarist, vocalist, and session musician on recordings by an impressive roster of artists, including Elton John, Reba McEntire, Kenny Chesney, Lyle Lovett, and Mark Knopfler. In recognition of his extraordinary musical achievements, he was inducted into the Rochester Music Hall of Fame in 2013.
Today, Potter resides in North Carolina but has never lost his connection to western New York. He has returned over the years to perform with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra during its Holiday Pops concerts, and his annual appearances with bassist Wes Foy and keyboardist Bruce Dailey—both former members of Wynonna Judd's touring band—have become a cherished tradition for area music lovers. This special performances offers a rare opportunity to experience one of Rochester's most accomplished musical artists in an intimate setting.
