- **Event Description**: A lecture by Andrew ByrneAbout this EventJohn Rennie (1761-1821) was, alongside Thomas Telford, the greatest civil engineer of his age. His remarkably varied career took in all aspects of his profession from bridges and dams, docks and harbours, roads and canals, railways and tunnels. He undertook all his work with great precision and professionalism.In 1812 the Admiralty engaged Rennie to rebuild Sheerness Dockyard. It was to be his most expensive work and the most prolonged, one which he would not live to see completed. The Dockyard, rebuilt between 1813-1831, survived pretty much complete until the Navy left in 1960, since when much has been swept away, including the neighbouring Garrison.Andrew Byrne is Vice Chair of Sheerness Dockyard Trust. A Quantity Surveyor, Byrne was administrator for the Spitalfields Historic Buildings Trust and has project managed the repair of several listed buildings. He has written two books and numerous articles on Georgian architecture and currently combines work as a freelance architectural historian with historic buildings consultancy. Byrne is the founder of LONDON 1840, a not-for-profit project, that is building a 1:1500 wooden scale model of London as it was in that year.To supplement this lecture, Rochester Bridge Trust is pleased to share The Life and Works of John Rennie, a collaborative research project by the Institution of Civil Engineers’ Archives and Historical Engineering Works Panels.Tickets are free but must be booked.Doors open at 6pm for a 6.30pm start.  Refreshments available.Attendees are allowed to book multiple tickets however it is asked that these are booked one at a time, providing the name of each guest in the booking.
