About the event

Jazz in the Bowl
Two great jazz bands present a free outdoor concert in Highland Bowl on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

About this Event

Jazz in the Bowl is a free outdoor concert sponsored by Highland Park Conservancy welcoming friends and neighbors to the Highland Bowl on South Avenue. Bring your lawn chair and settle in to enjoy the concert. The New Horizons Jazz Ensemble led by Don Sherman will be first up. Their "big band" format features brass, reed, and rhythm sections and is part of the Eastman Community Music School. After a brief intermission, the Mid-Century Modern Jazz Quartet will take the stage. These four musicians play with subtlety, elegance, and a swinging beat – it’s all about lines and phrasing. There will be free popcorn at the concert and wine sampling from Casa Larga Vineyards. All in all, a great summer evening of music.

New Horizons Jazz Ensemble

The New Horizons Jazz Ensemble (NHJE), founded and directed in 2018 by music teacher/ bandleader/ percussionist, Don Sherman, is a dynamic and energetic group of 19 musicians. The Ensemble plays a variety of jazz styles including Dixieland, Blues, Swing, Bebop, Latin, Rock, Funk, Afro-Cuban, Pop, Fusion and Contemporary arrangements. Also featured are comedic novelty pieces that encourage audience participation. The NHJE performs in a variety of venues including the Eastman School of Music's prestigious Kilbourn Hall, Kodak Hall, the CGI Rochester International Jazz Festival, the Fairport Canal Days, the Gates Chili Community Annual Music Festival, the Jazz 90.1 WGMC Jazz Series, the Highland Park Jazz in the Bowl event, the Charlotte Harbor Festival and at several area high schools.

Mid-Century Modern Jazz Quartet

The repertoire is a very eclectic mix of straight-up jazz: Miles, Monk, Gershwin, Golson, Porter, Shorter, Silver, Rollins, Jobim, Ellington, just to name a few. We excel in coffee houses , cafes and clubs, as well as parties and receptions. Wherever we play, we love to share our enjoyment of great music with our listeners. https://mcmjq.com
