Rochelle Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, invites the public participate in a public reading of the Declaration of Independence, July 8, 2026!

On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence and citizens of Philadelphia were summoned to the State House Yard for its public reading by Colonel John Nixon 4 days later.

On July 8, 2026; two hundred and fifty years later, members of Rochelle Chapter invite the public to join them at the Flagg-Rochelle Public Library to participate in the simultaneous reading of the Declaration with participants around the world. With a start time of 6 pm Eastern Daylight Time, commemorating the first public reading in Philadelphia, Rochelle Chapter’s reading will begin at 5 pm Central Daylight Time. Americans in all 50 states and 16 Territories of the United States will read the Declaration together to share the words and vision of American Independence. 
At the time the Declaration of Independence was adopted, the American colonies had been at war with Britain for about a year, with the war lasting until the Treaty of Paris on September 3, 1783.

Rochelle Chapter is honored to participate in this important commemorative event, which was initiated by the Hawaii America250 Commission.

All are welcome to participate in this free public event! Activities for children and youth will be available including a passport activity to learn about important figures to the Revolutionary War and trivia, as well as opportunities for photos and signing a copy of the Declaration of Independence, and more.
