I graduated from Melbourne University with a Doctor of Philosophy in Philosophy in 1993, and taught at Edith Cowan University, in Perth, at the University of Queensland, and at Bond. I have been teaching philosophy at Bond for 25 years.My philosophical work has covered an extraordinary range of areas of philosophical inquiry. I have had a go at almost everything. I have published work in metaphysics, philosophical logic, epistemology, philosophy of language, environmental ethics, aesthetics and film philosophy, moral psychology and the emotions, ethical theory and the virtues. And not to forget political philosophy. And philosophy of education. And the philosophy of video games. The great political philosopher Isiah Berlin once categorised thinkers into hedgehogs and foxes. Hedgehogs know one thing and study it at excruciating length. They are the deep specialists. Foxes run all over the place, finding fascination everywhere and things to study everywhere. So I'm not a hedgehog.Nevertheless, over the last twenty years I have concentrated on a single philosophical challenge. How do we use our engagement with art - primarily, for me, cinema and television, but also literature, music, and video games - to advance our philosophical understanding of value and ethics. How and why does art matter: to philosophers, but also to everybody?
