Ignite your child's creativity with our Children's Art Pop-Up Series led by popular art teacher Sarah Duran-Ballan! Held on the last Friday of every month from 4:00–5:30 PM at Art On 1st, each session offers a unique, hands-on exploration of a different art style. In February, kids dive into a Mixed Media Mash-Up—combining magazine cut-outs, fabric, paint, and found objects to create layered, collage-based artworks. Future sessions include Fauvism & Color Expression (March), Impressionism and Brush Strokes (April), Sculpture and 3-D Art (May), Pop Art: Bold and Bright Creations (June), Abstract Art Exploration (July), and Surrealism and Dream Worlds (August).
Registration is per class only.
Secure a spot for your child today and let their imagination soar in a fun, supportive setting!
Info: Theme: Combining a variety of materials and techniques to create unique, layered artwork.
Activity: Challenge kids to make a collage-based piece that incorporates magazine cut-outs, fabric, paint, found objects, and other materials to create depth and texture.
Info: Theme: Bold colors, simplified forms, and emotional expression through color.
Activity: Kids will create Fauvist inspired artwork by applying vivid colors in unconventional ways to express mood and convey feelings. We will discuss Fauvism and key artists like Matisse and Derain, highlighting the emotional use of color and how color influenced their feelings and the mood of their artwork.
Info: Theme: Exploring light, color, and dynamic brushstrokes to capture a scene.
Activity: Kids will create a quick, impressionistic painting using broad, expressive brushstrokes. Focus on capturing the “feeling” of a scene, like a garden, sunset, or tree, with vibrant colors and visible brushstrokes—rather than details or precision. Use watercolors or acrylics on canvas or thick paper to explore the spontaneous, free-flowing style of Impressionism.
Discuss how famous Impressionist artists (like Monet or Renoir) painted everyday moments,
emphasizing color and light.
Info: Theme: Working with 3D materials and creating sculptural art.
Activity: Mold sculptures from air-dry clay, focusing on detailed textures and proportions (this could also be something like creating abstract sculptures using wire, foam, or even recycled materials). Learn about famous sculptors (like Rodin or Calder) and challenge kids to create their own versions of a sculptural work.
Info: Theme: Pop art techniques and creating vibrant illustrations.
Activity: Teach comic-style drawing and discuss key features: bold colors, thick outlines and vibrant colors. Introduce the Ben-Day dots technique (using dots to fill areas of color).

Info: Theme: Creating imaginative, dream-like art with unexpected combinations.
Activity: Kids will create surrealistic art by combining everyday objects in unusual ways. They will focus on blending reality with the fantastical. Kids will sketch a surreal scene, using mixed media to create dream-inspired imagery—animals, objects, or landscapes in unusual contexts.
Briefly introduce surrealism and artists like Dalí and Magritte, explaining how it explores dreams and the subconscious. Encourage kids to think of strange, imaginative combinations of objects and places.
