Howard and David Bellamy continue to prove that the trail they’ve ridden to fame has been as unique as their music itself—music that now celebrates more than 40 years of success.
The road that began on the pop charts in the 1970s took a winding turn into country music in the 1980s, paving the way for duos such as Brooks & Dunn, Montgomery Gentry, Big & Rich, and The Judds. But before that road led to country, the musical journey of the Bellamy Brothers began creatively in their home state of Florida before exploding nationally amid the vibrant pop music culture of 1970s Los Angeles.
The brothers’ first official gig came in 1968 when they played a free show with their father at the Rattlesnake Roundup in San Antonio, Florida. They honed their early skills performing in clubs throughout the South and singing backup for artists such as Percy Sledge, Eddie Floyd, and Little Anthony & The Imperials. Within months, the brothers moved north to Atlanta, immersing themselves in the city’s emerging rock and country scene during the rise of the Allman Brothers Band.
During the turbulent cultural era of the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Bellamy Brothers’ music began to take on a harder edge that reflected the times. Songwriting became David Bellamy’s passion during long road trips between shows. It was this songwriting that soon provided the duo with their first national breakthrough.
That breakthrough came with the hit “Spiders & Snakes,” written by David and recorded by Jim Stafford. The song became a smash hit, eventually selling more than three million copies worldwide and launching the Bellamy Brothers into the Los Angeles music scene. There, Howard and David found themselves surrounded by the musical legends of the era, including Bob Dylan, James Taylor, and Van Morrison, along with country-rock pioneers like Poco and The Byrds.
Their own breakout moment arrived in 1976 when their single “Let Your Love Flow” became an international sensation. The song topped charts in both the United States and Europe and remained on international charts long enough to build a massive global fan base. In Germany alone, it held the #1 position for more than two months. The Bellamys soon found themselves performing sold-out shows and sharing stages with artists such as Loggins & Messina, The Doobie Brothers, and The Beach Boys.
As their sound evolved, the brothers began leaning more heavily into their country roots. By the late 1970s they returned to the top of the charts with another massive hit, “If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body (Would You Hold It Against Me).” Originally scribbled on a dinner napkin by David, the song soared to #1 on the country charts and became the first of fourteen #1 singles in the United States.
Hit after hit followed, including “Dancing Cowboys,” “Sugar Daddy,” “You Ain’t Just Whistlin’ Dixie,” “Lovers Live Longer,” “Do You Love As Good As You Look,” “Redneck Girl,” “For All the Wrong Reasons,” “I Love Her Mind,” “I Need More of You,” “Old Hippie,” “Kids of the Baby Boom,” “Reggae Cowboy,” and “Crazy From the Heart.” These songs helped fill the Bellamy Brothers’ career with gold and platinum success.
Along the way, Howard and David helped establish the now-popular country “duo” category. They hold records with both the Academy of Country Music (ACM) and the Country Music Association (CMA) for the most duo nominations, along with multiple Grammy nominations.
Internationally, the Bellamy Brothers have continued to thrive, releasing more than two dozen hit songs outside the United States that were never released domestically. Their ability to match strong melodies with global audiences has helped them maintain a loyal fan base across Europe and beyond.
“For international releases, you have to have a strong melody,” notes David. “The lyric is very important, but internationally the melody is something fans can lock into, even if they don’t understand every word.”
Today, the Bellamy Brothers remain one of the hardest-working acts in country music, performing more than 200 shows a year around the world. “We’re old road dogs,” laughs Howard when asked about their relentless touring schedule. Adds David, “Our live draw is bigger than it was in the ’80s. The fans who grew up with our music have raised a whole new generation of Bellamy fans.”
When they’re not on the road, Howard and David return to their 150-acre family ranch in Darby, Florida, just north of Tampa. The working ranch includes purebred Charolais cattle and quarter horses, surrounded by fruit trees, ancient oaks, and crepe myrtles. Three generations of the Bellamy family live on the property, led by their mother, Frances.
The Bellamy Brothers’ latest project, “40 Years,” celebrates their remarkable career with a special two-disc collection featuring 20 of their biggest hits alongside 20 brand-new songs.
