It was cultivated as farmland by the Hallock family from the 1700s to the early/mid 1900s. Since then the land has been used as a campground for scouts, an illegal sand mining operation, and at one point the planned grounds for a nuclear power plant before being purchased by the state in 2002. While the soil has recovered from all of this disturbance, invasive plants have had ample time to spread throughout the park. These invasive plants include mugwort, mile-a-minute, bamboo, japanese knotwood, barberry, and many more!The park staff would like to establish this beach habitat exhibit to create an educational benefit for patrons while reducing lawn area to save on energy use for mowing. When complete, the outdoor exhibit will feature several native beach plants such as prickly pear cactus, red cedar, beachgrass, switchgrass, little bluestem and more.
