Dan developed a passion for local history in 2006 while searching for a history of Beldenville and discovering that none existed. At the same time, his father, Chuck Geister, was writing about his own experiences growing up in Beldenville during the 1940s and 1950s. Those memoirs were published in 2007 as Lillies of My Valley.

With the support of the Pierce County Historical Association and Ursula Peterson, who served as editor, Dan wrote his first local history book, a history of Beldenville, published in 2008. He later collaborated with Pat Mory on a history of Ellsworth, published in 2013.

Dan's interest in local history soon expanded to River Falls. He initially focused on Main Street, conducting much of the research used for the historical plaques on downtown buildings, before broadening his work to include other areas of the city and the wider region. He has also developed a strong interest in the genealogy of Pierce County families.

Dan served on the River Falls Historic Preservation Commission from 2009 to 2012 and has recently returned to the commission. He is currently working with Jayne Hoffman on a comprehensive history of River Falls, scheduled for publication in 2028 and 2029.

In recognition of the nation's semiquincentennial, Dan's presentation will focus on the earliest decade of River Falls as a community, exploring the people, events, and developments that shaped its beginnings.
