- **Event Start and End Date**: Wed, 21 Oct, 2026 at 07:00 pm – Wed, 21 Oct, 2026 at 08:30 pm (-05:00)
- **Event Description**: Julie of the Wolves was published in 1972, and was one of the most commonly banned and challenged novels in the 1990s and 2000s.

Like many banned books written for the ya audience, Julie of the Wolves is a Newberry Medal award-winner. The major objection is to a specific scene in the book where Julie’s husband through an arranged marriage assaults her.

Craighead George said that she was proud to have her book among the list of banned books. She had an amazing life as a writer. I have to admit that until looking her up right now, I had no idea that the woman responsible for this series of books was also one of the first women journalists in the White House Press Corps, and worked for The Washington Post in the 1940s. What an absolute bad ass.

What makes the discussion of this particular banned book extra interesting will be the necessarily layered discussion of what was not talked about or understood in 1972. The nuanced importance we now understand of Own Voices.

How does the fact that Jean Craighead George was a white woman writing a deeply spiritual native story effect how we read this book 54 years after it was written?

I'm looking forward to the discussion.
