Some interesting facts… 🤓

👉🏼 Built in 1855, it’s considered one of the most complete surviving Victorian workhouses. Upon entry, husbands, wives, and children were apparently split into different wards. This policy was meant to discourage people from relying on the workhouse unless absolutely desperate.

👉🏼You had to work for your food and bed. Inmates (called “paupers”) performed hard, monotonous labour such as: Breaking stones, Picking apart old ropes, Laundry and cleaning.

👉🏼It had its own punishment cells. There were isolation cells for anyone who broke rules. These were bare, cold rooms designed to enforce discipline.

👉🏼Children lived and worked there too. Many received basic schooling, but they also worked. Some were later sent into domestic service or apprenticeships.

👉🏼It operated for nearly 90 years. It stayed open as a workhouse until 1939, when the system finally ended and the building became accommodation and later a museum.

👉🏼It’s considered highly haunted 👻 - hence why it’s so popular with paranormal investigators! It’s said that visitors and staff have reported footsteps in empty corridors, Doors closing on their own, Voices and even shadow figures! 🥷🏿
