Experience the stunning fall colors of Texas as we explore the southwestern edge of the Edwards Plateau. Garner State Park offers dramatic terrain with deep canyons, crystal-clear streams, high mesas, and carved limestone cliffs, all coming alive with vibrant autumn hues in October.
Our approximately 10-mile hike will take us past some of the park’s highlights, including Old Baldy Summit, Crystal Cave, Painted Rock Overlook, and Shady Oak, offering panoramic vistas and plenty of opportunities for photos along the way.
After the trail, we’ll head outside of the park for a hearty meal before returning and settling in for a campout near the Frio River. The river’s pristine waters provide the perfect spot to relax, cool off, and soak in the beauty of the surrounding hills and foliage.
Whether you’re chasing the fall colors, rugged scenery, or a refreshing river dip, this adventure promises a full day of hiking, exploring, and connecting with the natural beauty of the Texas Hill Country.
Campsite(s) I recommend: Any within Pecan Grove or Oakmont
Pro tip: Get your daypass or camping reservations as soon as possible. This park frequently sells out of both. Keep in mind the gate doesn’t open to the park until 7:45am and frequently has a line to get in. Arrive early to make the 9:00am start time! Also, don’t neglect visiting the Native Plant & Wildflower garden.
