Woven Pine Needle Small Basket or Wall Hanging with a Cabochon

From a simple cabochon to a beautiful pine needle basket or small wall hanging—your choice! It may look complicated, but the truth is that anyone can learn to weave a basket. Starting small is the perfect way to begin, and once you’ve “caught the fever,” you may have a hard time stopping.

In this class, you will learn the basics of pine needle weaving using waxed linen and beads as you create a small basket or wall hanging around a prepared cabochon stone. In addition to basic weaving techniques, you will learn how to add beads, coil the pine needles, and shape your piece into different forms.

The instructor will provide a prepared cabochon, pine needles, assorted colors of waxed linen, needles, gauges, shared tools, and a tutorial. All supplies will be provided, however, if you already have these items at home, bring them with you to the class. No need to pre-purchase as the instructor will have tools to share and beads to use.

If you have favorite beads, feel free to bring them (approximately 15–20 beads with holes large enough for a #18 needle to pass through twice with thread)

These are the characteristics of gourds and pine needles that fascinate, inspire, and challenge me as an artist. Janice enjoys the freedom of expression and the process of creating art that embodies natural beauty, balance, and tactile appeal. Her creativity began with gourds and was soon complemented by pine needle weaving, two art forms that harmonize naturally. Initially self-taught, Janice has continually expanded her skills and knowledge by taking classes with some of the finest artists in both gourd art and weaving.

Her gourd and pine needle art reflects a deep love of nature and all things natural. The interplay of colors and designs is used to evoke a sense of place, wonder, and emotion. She is proud to share this unique art form, created from such extraordinary natural materials.
