The Garden of Afflictions Film Screening and Q & A

The VCU Human Security Initiative and Philosophy Club are presenting the documentary O Jardim das Aflições, The Garden of Afflictions. Following the film will be a short discussion with Olavo de Carvalho.

The film explores Brazilian philosopher Olavo de Carvalho’s thinking, presented through his presence, his daily work routine, and his family life in Virginia (USA), where he now lives. Themes are taken from his homonymous book published in 1995 as the basis for the making of the film; such as the symbolism of the gardens on the philosophic tradition, individual freedom and the oppression from the collective, the aristotelic thinking, and one of the most important themes of his thinking: death and philosophy - ideas that are still important to us even facing our death - with the following motto: “What will you do with your life while there’s still time?
