EKU Giles Gallery presents The Southern Prize: Legacy and Innovation in Contemporary Southern Visual Art, on view January 26 through February 20, 2026. Curated by Shannon Rae Lindsey and organized through a highly competitive open call by South Arts, The Southern Prize features more than 40 works by nine artists representing nine states across the Southern region. The exhibition bridges legacy and innovation in contemporary visual art, highlighting artists working in painting, drawing, photography, textiles, ceramics, and sculpture. Each State Fellow honors Southern creative traditions while addressing, head-on, some of today’s most pressing cultural conversations. DUE TO SEVERE WEATHER AND CAMPUS CLOSURES THE OPENING RECEPTION WILL BE MOVED TO THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 5 FROM4:30-7PM. A gallery talk with award-winning Kentucky State Fellow, and former EKU professor, Travis Townsend will occur at approximately 5pm during the reception. 

The Southern Prize and State Fellowships for Visual Arts are made possible through generous support from the Windgate Foundation, Southern First Bank, Maxwell/Hanrahan Foundation, The Warner Fund, Hambidge Center for the Creative Arts &amp; Sciences, and Kentucky Museum for Art &amp; Craft. EKU Giles Gallery is open and free to the public Monday–Friday, 11 AM–4 PM.

ABOUT THE GALLERY
Founded in 1973, the EKU Giles Gallery serves both the campus and commonwealth, showcasing multidisciplinary creative work from artists of regional and national acclaim. The gallery is named for Fred Parker Giles, serving Eastern Kentucky University from 1939–64. EKU Giles Gallery is part of the School of Art &amp; Design (SoAD) and the Institute for Creative &amp; Collaborative Arts (ICCA).
