Did you know that two of the most iconic Christmas movies of all time were directed by the same person - and couldn’t be more different from one another?
That’s right, in 1974 Bob Clark cast a very young Margot Kidder and Keir Dullea (hot off of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY) in BLACK CHRISTMAS. The film takes place in a sorority house over Christmas break. During what should be the most wonderful time of the year, members are menaced by an unknown and mysterious stalker. Incredibly innovative for its styling at the time—specifically its use of shots from the intruder’s POV—this film is often argued by cinephiles as being the first true slasher movie (Texas Chain Saw Massacre fans, feel free to sound off in the comments).
In 1983, Clark would flip the vibe completely by helming A CHRISTMAS STORY. Considered to be one of the most heart-warming and beloved holiday films of all time, the story centers around young Ralphie Parker and his exploits to obtain the perfect Christmas gift. To this day, this film still personifies nostalgic Americana and has served as a holiday hallmark for generations of movie lovers.
A more perfect Holiday Double-Feature we cannot fathom. We’ll be kicking off the evening with A CHRISTMAS STORY at 7:00 P.M. before screening BLACK CHRISTMAS at 9:00 P.M.—come for the fun, stick around for the fear if you dare.
