- **Event Description**: Join us in the Doris Roberts Gallery at RPL for a special partnership with Manhattan Project National Historical Park for Messages of Peace, part of the Park's annual Days of Peace and Remembrance commemorating the atomic bombings of Japan in 1945. Learn about Sadako Sasaki, a young survivor of Hiroshima, while decorating the luminaria bags that will be used during the Lights for Peace event on August 9 at Howard Amon Park. On August 3, drop in anytime between 3:00-5:00 pm to write or draw a message of peace. The 20-minute ranger program will start at 3:30 pm.

On August 9, 1945, the US Army Air Forces dropped the plutonium-fueled Fat Man atomic bomb over Nagasaki, Japan, in the second atomic bombing of Japan during the waning days of World War II. The Manhattan Project facility at Hanford produced the plutonium used in the Fat Man bomb and in the Trinity Test on July 16, 1945.

Lights for Peace

Each year on August 9 at 8:00 pm PDT, the park hosts a Lights for Peace at the Fingernail Stage in Howard Amon Park in Richland, Washington. The program features music from the Mid-Columbia Mastersingers, a guest speaker, and an opportunity to ring a peace bell. Staff also display luminarias with messages of peace from the public along a path that participants are encouraged to walk for a quiet, contemplative experience.
