- **Event Description**: 2026 ART IN THE WAREHOUSE: AN ARTIST SERIES

The AD German Warehouse Conservancy is pleased to invite the public to the fourth exhibit in the 2026 Art in the Warehouse Series. The fourth featured artist is Thomas McMahon.

Artist Statement: I was a high school and college art teacher in the 1970s and 1980s, in 1982 I quit teaching and wound up farming. I always told myself I was going to paint again, forty years later I finally did.

I chose to paint portraits because in portraits the subject is a given, for me painting is about the process of painting not the final product. I believe the viewer brings their own meaning to a painting no matter what the artist intends. For me the painting process is a conversation between the canvas and myself. Once the first mark is put on the canvas it determines what the next mark will be. I don’t start with a preconceived idea of what the painting will look like when it is done, each painting is a puzzle, and I don’t know what it will look like until it is done.

I start each painting with reference; I prefer non-posted photos. I try to keep a likeness, but sometimes I lose it. That doesn’t bother me, I mostly think about composition and color. I combine areas of realism with areas of abstraction and brushwork. I don’t pretend to capture the essence or personality of the people I paint I believe all paintings say more about the person that painted it than the subject that is represented. I find it interesting to hear different viewers interpretations of the art they experience.

The exhibit will open with a reception on Friday, September 11th, 4:30-8 PM at The AD German Warehouse designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, 300 S Church St, Richland Center. At 4:30 PM Thomas McMahon will introduce his work during an artist talk. Following the artist talk, enjoy champagne, hors d’oeuvres and beer, wine, soft drinks, or CBD beverages available for purchase in the 1921 AD Lounge.

Thomas's oil paintings will be on display through the end of October. All artwork is available for purchase or commission.
