Artist Statements: Black Pearl Design Studio: Rick Mommaerts- I have been a woodworker in both construction and trim carpentry most of my life. I have worked as a furniture and cabinet maker, along with designing and building high-end light fixtures. My inner passion has always been in the smaller forms of artistic expression, such as jewelry. One year ago, I gave myself permission to step away from the everyday stressors in the world and start creating my own jewelry. I embrace the organic style as a form of self-expression concerning the slow decay of society and the influence of AI, which is stripping away individuality. My media includes semi-precious metals - copper, brass, silver, and nickel. Each piece is combination of elements such as wood, stone, abalone or anything that piques my interest. Each piece is unique and expresses a moment in time that speaks to every individual differently - which is exactly what I am looking for, that every piece tells its own story and no two are alike... Shelly Mommaerts Roh- I have been in the jewelry industry for more than three decades and have seen many beautiful pieces. The ones that caught my attention the most, used color, rich enamels and semi-precious stones. After I retired, I found myself attracted to beadwork and started making my own jewelry. Then my brother introduced me to his pendants. It was only natural that we would collaborate, using each of our visions - that’s when our bold style emerged. With my passion for colored stones and the power of online shopping, I can source incredible beads from around the world. Each necklace is balanced deliberately for color. Every pendant is presented to me with unique challenges - Some speak immediately, while some sit silently. Some demand another metal element that must be made. The process of creation and collaboration is both exhilarating and satisfying, when each piece is completed and our combined visions come together...
