- **Event Description**: Free 2-day hands-on workshop on removing Rhododendron ponticum and Cherry Laurel, with experts from across Scotland. No experience needed.About this EventLearn how to protect Scotland's woodlands from invasive plantsRhododendron ponticum and Cherry Laurel are two of the biggest threats to Scotland's native woodlands. Both were planted as ornamentals and have since spread through woods across Scotland, including our own Ardenconnel Wood. They form dense evergreen thickets that block out light, smother the woodland floor, and stop native trees from regenerating. Over time they can turn a living, diverse woodland into a dark monoculture where little else survives. Rhododendron is one of the main threats to Scotland's temperate rainforest, a habitat of international importance that survives along our Atlantic coast. The good news is that we can do something about this. With the right techniques, planning and long-term follow-up woodland can be restored. This free two-day workshop, hosted by Rhu & Shandon Community Trust, brings together some of the people doing this work across Scotland to share what works, from large landscape-scale projects to community volunteer groups.Who's speakingRSPB Scotland, Morvern Rainforest Team: the Morvern Rhododendron ponticum Project and the lever & mulch techniqueTom Lusink, Raasay Development Trust: stem treatment ("frilling") and why long-term follow-up mattersMalcolm Young, Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park: planning rhododendron removal at scaleHeather Morrison and team, Argyll Countryside Trust: rainforest community action, citizen science and mappingAndy Donald, Helensburgh Community Woodlands Group: tackling Cherry LaurelRob Stuart, Fiona Baker and Kelsey Hoppe, Rhu & Shandon Community Trust / Shandon Community Woodland Group: the Ardenconnel Wood story, documenting local biodiversity, and building a volunteer communityWhat to expectSaturday 10 October, Rhu Community Hall (9:00 to 16:30): Talks and case studies on INNS removal, covering why it matters, how different projects have approached it, and the main removal techniques for rhododendron and cherry laurel.Sunday 11 October, Ardenconnel Wood (9:30 to 15:30): Hands-on learning in the wood.
