The #61 has been the family race number for nearly 60 years. Mike’s dad, Dave—my late father-in-law—and his two brother-in-laws made up a race team back in the early days. Uncle Art was the driver, and Dave was Crew Chief and with the other uncle (Larry Hamman) they added their ages together to come up with the number 61.  Not exactly the most conventional way to pick a race number—but it stuck, and it became part of the family legacy.

Since then, Art’s son, my husband Mike, and then our daughter Kaley have all raced under that same number.  Racing has always been a part of Mike’s life—he grew up at the dirt track and was already racing karts when I met him. In fact, our second date was a trip to Devil’s Bowl Speedway to watch the World of Outlaws. Looking back, I think it might have been a test… and thankfully, I passed—because here we are, heading into our 22nd (angel number!) race season at KAM Kartway.

We even learned of Dave’s passing on a race day, and we chose to keep racing—because we knew that’s what he would have wanted. There’s no better way to honor him than by continuing what he loved and passing that passion down through generations.

This weekend is especially meaningful, as Mike’s “Race Mom” and sister, Val, are visiting from South Dakota for the month. It will likely be the last time Mom is able to attend a race in person, which makes it all the more special. In honor of Dave, she is generously putting up a cash bonus for the winner.

We’re incredibly grateful—for the memories, the legacy, and the love of racing that Dave gave to all of us.
