Bandaríski trompetleikarinn og tónskáldið Wadada Leo Smith verður á tónleikaferðalagi í Evrópu í síðasta skipti á ferli sem spannar meir en 6 áratugi. Hann hefur heimsótt Ísland níu sinnum á rúmlega 40 árum til tónleikahalds og kennslu, stundum í langan tíma í einu. Á þessu tímabili hefur hann haft mikil áhrif á íslenska tónlistarmenn og átt samstarf við fjölmarga, m.a. Skúla Sverrisson, Matthías Hemstock, Magnús Trygvason Elíassen, Hilmar Jensson o.fl. sem hafa komið fram með honum og einnig leikið inn á upptökur. Tónleikar Wadada og píanóleikarans Vijay Iyer í Hörpu í janúar 2017 voru vel sóttir og eftirminnilegir. Samstarfsfólk Wadada á Íslandi vill nota tækifærið á fyrirhugaðri hinstu tónleikaferð hans til Evrópu og efna til síðustu tónleika á Íslandi 18. nóvember, til að fagna þeim tímamótum og þakka fyrir framlag Wadada til íslenskrar tónlistar.
Wadada Leo Smith er frumkvöðull í bandarískri jazz- og nútímatónlist og einn af helstu trompetleikurum samtímans. Árið 2016 var hann valinn besti trompetleikari jazzins og jazzmaður ársins af tímaritinu DownBeat og samtök jazzblaðamanna völdu hann tónskáld ársins 2015.

Trompetmeistarinn og tónskáldið hefur á síðustu árum hlotið margar viðurkenningar eins og æðstu viðurkenningu UCLA háskólans til leikmanna 2019, en aðrir sem hafa hlotið þá viðurkenningu eru m.a. Danski gítarleikarinn og tónskáldið Jakob Bro hefur vakið mikla athygli í jazzheiminum síðustu ár fyrir fjölbreytta tónlist sína. Hann hefur gefið út meira en 20 hljóðritanir með mörgum heimsþekktum tónlistarmönnum og hlotið mikið lof fyrir. Síðasta plata hans sem kom út hjá ECM útgáfunni í fyrra hlaut m.a. 5 stjörnur hjá gagnrýnanda breska blaðsins Guardian. Bro hefur margsinnis komið til Íslands til tónleikahalds, m.a. leikið með Skúla Sverrissyni og Óskari Guðjónssyni í Norðurljósasal Hörpu á jazzhátíð Reykjavíkur 2022 og aftur í maí 2025 á tónleikaferð um Ísland.
Bassaleikarinn og tónskáldið Skúli Sverrisson hefur átt langan tónlistarferil og leikið inn á rúmlega 100 hljóðritanir með fjölmörgu tónlistarfólki, m.a. Wadada Leo Smith, Hildi Guðnadóttur, Báru Gísladóttur, Hilmari Jenssyni, Jim Black, Chris Speed, Anthony Burr, Laurie Anderson, Allan Holdsworth, Ryuichi Sakamoto, David Sylvian, Blonde Redhead, Yungchen Lhamo, Jamshied Sharifi og Ólöfu Arnalds og hljómsveitunum Pachora, og Alas No Axis. Skúli hefur einnig verið tónlistarstjóri í hljómsveit tónlistarkonunnar Laurie Anderson.
Matthías Hemstock trommu- og slagverksleikari nam við Tónlistarskóla FÍH og Berklee College of Music í Boston. Hann hefur leikið afar fjölbreytilega tónlist gegnum tíðina; með Sinfóníuhljómsveit Íslands, frjálsan spuna, latíntónlist, rokk, popp og síðast en ekki síst hefur hann verið einn af helstu jazztrommuleikurum landsins síðustu áratugina. Í júní fékk Matthías styrkveitingu frá minningarsjóði Kristjáns Eldjárns fyrir framlag sitt til tónlistar.

In November trumpeter and composer Wadada Leo Smith will tour Europe for the last time in a career that spans more than 6 decades. He has visited Iceland nine times in over 40 years to perform and teach, sometimes for long periods at a time. During this period, he has had a great influence on Icelandic musicians and has collaborated with numerous people, including Skúla Sverrisson, Matthías Hemstock, Magnús Trygvason Elíassen, Hilmar Jensson and others who have performed with him and also played on recordings. Wadada's colleagues in Iceland want to use the opportunity and organize a final concert in Iceland (and therefore Europe as well) on November 18, to celebrate that milestone and thank Wadada for his contribution to Icelandic music.
Wadada Leo Smith is a pioneer in American jazz and contemporary music and one of the leading trumpeters of our time. In 2016, he was named the best jazz trumpeter and jazzman of the year by DownBeat magazine, and the Jazz Journalists Association named him the composer of the year in 2015.

His ode to civil rights, the four-CD box set Ten Freedom Summers, was nominated for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Music. In addition to performing, Wadada has taught composition at Bard College, CalArts, and Harvard. The trumpet master and composer has received many awards in recent years, such as UCLA's Medal highest award for musicians in 2019, but others who have received this award include Ella Fitzgerald, Henry Mancini, Herb Alpert and Quincy Jones, the author Toni Morrison and former president Bill Clinton. Wadada was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters, an honorary society of artists and writers, in 2023 for his contributions to musical creation.
In March of this year, Wadada and pianist Vijay Iyer released a new duet album, Defiant Life, on ECM Records, which they have received much praise for.

He has released more than 20 recordings with many world-renowned musicians and has received much praise for them. His last album, released on ECM Records last year, received 5 stars from the British newspaper The Guardian. Bro has performed in Iceland many times, including playing with Skúli Sverrisson and Óskar Guðjónsson in Harpa's Norðurljósa Hall at the Reykjavík Jazz Festival 2022 and again in May 2025 on a concert tour of Iceland.
Bassist and composer Skúli Sverrisson has a long musical career and has played on over 100 recordings with numerous musicians, including Wadada Leo Smith, Hildur Guðnadóttir, Bára Gísladóttir, Hilmar Jensson, Jim Black, Chris Speed, Anthony Burr, Laurie Anderson, Allan Holdsworth, Ryuichi Sakamoto, David Sylvian, Blonde Redhead, Yungchen Lhamo, Jamshied Sharifi and Ólöf Arnalds and the bands Pachora, and Alas No Axis. Skúli has also been the musical director of Laurie Anderson's band.
Drummer and percussionist Matthías Hemstock studied at the Icelandic Academy of Music and Berklee College of Music in Boston. He has played a very diverse range of music over the years; with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, free improvisation, latin music, rock, pop and last but not least he has been one of the country's leading jazz drummers in recent decades. In June, Matthías received a grant from the Kristján Eldjárn Memorial Fund for his contributions to music.
