Whales of Iceland is proud to present the opening of a new exhibition by English visual artist Rebecca Douglas, followed by a midnight sun whale watching tour with scientists from the whale research organization Whale Wise. The exhibition is mixed media, featuring both photography as well as a sculpture which will be inspired by and created using materials from the coast of Iceland during her creative residency at Arctic Canvas on Snæfellsnes.

We warmly welcome you on 8th July from 18:00 to 20:00 for a free formal opening, where Rebecca and Whale Wise scientists will be in attendance to discuss the exhibition and ongoing citizen science initiatives.

Immediately following the opening, Whale Wise will join the Midnight Sun Whale Watching tour with Special Tours to discuss their research, departing from the Old Harbour at 21:00. Tickets can be purchased with a 10% discount when using the discount code WHALEWISE here: https://specialtours.is/tour/whale-watching-midnight-sun-tour/ (make sure to choose the departure on 8th July). 10% of all proceeds from the tour will be donated to Whale Wise.

The exhibition will then stand until 30th September.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Rebecca Douglas is a visual storyteller, ocean advocate, and artist whose work bridges science and myth, intellect and intuition. Her internationally exhibited photography and film explore liminal spaces where nature’s stories unfold with radical authenticity. With a background in Geography and Marine Resource Management, she creates compelling narratives that celebrate beauty while confronting environmental urgency. Rebecca serves as Board President of Whale Wise, and has previously collaborated with National Geographic, NASA, and others.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

The sea is a living, breathing storyteller. Beneath the surface, an entire world reveals itself, whales carving migration routes across oceans, jellyfish and plankton blooms drifting with the currents, seals moving effortlessly between shore and sea. All life on earth is sustained by the sea, from the deepest depths to the birds soaring above, feathering the connection between earth, sea and sky. Whales are architects of the ocean, a keystone species cycling nutrients that fuel an entire ecosystem and they are vital in regulating the planet’s carbon balance. Seabirds like gannets and puffins dive from the air for food, their survival intricately tied to the abundance below.

This photography exhibition invites you to explore these wild edges, the unseen world beneath the surface, where science meets story, igniting curiosity, sparking wonder and awe. Yet beneath this beauty, the ocean is in peril. Climate change, pollution and human impact threaten these delicate ecosystems, placing the species that depend on them at risk. To witness the sea in this way is to deepen our connection to it.

To understand its messages is to awaken to its urgency, to answer the call and stand as guardians of the ocean and all that it sustains.
