Viðburðurinn, sem er haldinn á vegum EDDU rannsóknaseturs, fer fram í Auðarsal í Veröld miðvikudaginn 29. október næstkomandi og hefst kl. 16.00. Öll velkomin á meðan húsrúm leyfir.

The Lottocratic mentality – sem á íslensku gæti kallast Hugsunarháttur happræðis – er ný bók stjórnamálaheimspekinganna Nadiu Urbinati og Cristinu Lafont um eina helstu nýjung lýðræðislegra stjórnmála: Að draga úr vægi kosninga en beita í þeirra stað slembivali í auknum mæli til að velja fulltrúa til trúnaðarstarfa fyrir almenning.

Í bókinni nálgast þær happræði á gagnrýnum forsendum og benda á þær hættur sem fylgja því að gera slembivali hærra undir höfði en hefðbundnum lýðræðislegum stjórnmálum þar sem kept er um hylli og atkvæði kjósenda.

Cristina Lafont er vel þekkt fyrir bók sína Democratic Shortcuts (Lýðræði styttir sér leið) þar sem hún gagnrýnir hugmyndir um slembivaldar löggjafar- og stefnumótunarsamkomur og bendir á að slembival geti aldrei uppfyllt lögmætiskröfu lýðræðislegra stjórnmála. Lafont hefur haldið því fram að hugmyndafræði slembilvalsins ógni nokkrum meginreglum lýðræðisins á borð við pólitískan jöfnuð, og frelsi og geti auðveldlega leitt til andlýðræðislegra stjórnarhátta undir yfirskini skilvirkni við lausn félagslegra verkefna.

Nadia Urbinati er meðal áhrifamestu stjórnspekinga samtímans. Í bók sinni Democracy disfigured (Lýðræði afmyndað) bendir hún á mikilvægi lýðræðislegrar umræðu þar sem skoðanir takast á frekar en að lýðræðið sé endurskilgreint sem leit að þekkingu. Urbinati hefur sérstaklega beint sjónum að mikilvægi stjórnmálaflokka í lýðræðislegum stjórnmálum.
Í Hugsunarhætti happræðis halda Urbinati og Lafont því fram að slembival leysi engin vandamál lýðræðis. Þótt vissulega megi beita því að vissu marki, sé algjör misskilningur að halda því fram að það geti leyst samkeppnisstjórnmál af hólmi. Þær gagnrýna ekk síst þann tækni-popúlisma sem er samfara hugmyndum um að helsti vandi lýðræðis í dag sé vanþekking og að bæta megi úr vanköntum lýðræðis með því að slembivelja fulltrúa til þessa að vinna sameiginlega að lausnum vandamála með hlutlæga þekkingu að leiðarljósi.

Nadia Urbinati, Professor at Columbia University, and Cristina Lafont, Professor at Northwestern University, discuss their book The Lottocratic Mentality.
The event, organized by the EDDA Research Center, will take place in Auðarsalur, Veröld – House of Vigdís, on Wednesday, October 29 at 16:00. The lecture is open to everyone.

The Lottocratic Mentality is a new book by the political philosophers Nadia Urbinati and Cristina Lafont about one of the main innovations of democratic politics: reducing the importance of elections and increasingly using random selection to select representatives for public office and decision-making.

In the book, they approach random selection of representatives on critical grounds and point out the dangers of eroding traditional democratic politics where voters elect representatives who campaign to win their favor.

Cristina Lafont is well known for her book Democratic Shortcuts, in which she criticizes ideas about mini publics and randomly selected assemblies and points out that random selection can never meet the legitimacy requirements of democratic politics. Lafont has argued that the ideology of random selection threatens several principles of democracy, such as political equality and freedom, and can easily lead to anti-democratic governance under the guise of efficient problem-solving.
Nadia Urbinati is among the most influential political philosophers of our time. In her book Democracy Disfigured, she points to the importance of the democratic debate in which opinions are challenged rather than democracy being redefined as a search for knowledge. Urbinati has particularly focused on the importance of political parties in democratic politics.

In The lottocratic mentality, Urbinati and Lafont argue that random selection does not solve any of the current problems of democracy. While it can certainly be used to a certain extent, it is a misunderstanding to claim that it can replace competitive politics. They criticize, in particular, the techno-populism that accompanies the idea that the main problem with democracy today is public ignorance and that the shortcomings of democracy can be remedied by randomly selecting representatives to work together on solutions to problems guided by objective knowledge.
