Jessie Belland grew up going to Wheatland events and spent several years running kids’ activities at another Michigan music festival. She learned pottery in college and has taught many workshops for kids (and a few for adults) over the past 10+ years. Clay is a great art medium for enjoying the process
independent from the finished product, and the experience can easily be shared by groups that are mixed ages and skill levels.
Kids will be able to try out various handbuilding methods – slabbing, pinching, and coiling – using air-dry clay. It will be a flexible workshop, with each child deciding what they’d like to create. Jessie will give a demonstration of basic techniques to everyone, and one-on-one support to those who want it.
Air-dry clay becomes hard and reasonably durable without the use of a kiln, but is NOT food safe and should NOT be exposed to liquids. Color decorations on the clay will not be part of the workshop, but can be done at home using paints, crayons etc.
If you have the intense desire to paint and can't wait to get home for your slab clay to be fully dry, no worries, we have pumpkins and paint for you! There will be additional festive fall activities available as well. You can make your own miniature make-and-take scarecrow.
A healthy snack will be provided, but the focus is likely to be on the yummy homemade doughnuts.
As always, Wheatscouts is free to all who attend!
About Wheatscouts: Wheatland Music Organization (501(c)(3)) children’s program was started at Wheatland in 1987 to introduce children to folk arts and traditional music in a casual, kid-friendly setting. Wheatscouts events are free of charge, open to the public and all ages of children are welcome. No preregistration or WMO membership is required. From learning about different square & contra dances, songs, storytelling, string & percussion music instruments to crafts & activities like bookbinding, nature walks and tie-dye - we focus on finding new ways to teach the old ways.
Wheatscouts events typically take place the 2nd Saturday (October – May) 11 AM till 1 PM
The event includes a break with healthy snacks provided. Feel free to bring your own food if you or your child has dietary restrictions or to share with the group! Check wheatlandmusic.org or the ‘Wheatscouts – Traditional Arts & Music for Kids’ Facebook page for the latest information on our future events!
