Modern martial arts often fragment what earlier traditions understood as unified—separating combat skill from personal cultivation, physical training from philosophical principles, individual achievement from community bonds. Meihuaquan preserves an older, more integrated approach.

This workshop employs meihuaquan's approach: interweaving traditional philosophy with physical training to cultivate the body-mind as a unified system. This integration achieves high-level martial skill, while also enhancing cooperation, connection with others, and community cohesion-- dimensions that challenge conventional understanding of martial arts. 

Rooted in Daoist, Buddhist, and Confucian principles, meihuaquan embodies an Asian understanding of the body fundamentally different from Western mechanical frameworks. Viewing the body-mind as an integrated energetic system rather than separate components proves remarkably effective for advancing martial skill, health, well-being and social trust.

Course content:
The Five Stances- Meihuaquan's signature training approach, are not fighting techniques, but work to restructure the "body-mind". Using the Five Elements to understand systemic processual transformation in the body, the Stances cultivate the integrated skills necessary to address  physical, psychological, and environmental challenges. 

Improvised movement- A series of exercises will help us move in an organic fashion that emerges naturally, and in accordance with the environment and conditions that unfold around us. This training greatly improves coordination, dexterity, and adaptability.
Takeaway: You will learn principles/theory and martial training approaches that will improve your energy state, physical coordination, mental clarity, and intellect-- applicable to any discipline you study.

Training will be suitable for people of all ages and levels of mobility. The class will involve 2-person drills but will be non-contact. Be prepared to move in ways that you have never experienced. The workshop will be taught by Ray Ambrosi, Jeff Quinn, and WU I-Ying. 



Biography of Instructor: 

Ray Ambrosi has trained in meihuaquan since 1990 under the renowned meihuaquan master Yan Zijie. After meeting Teacher Yan, Ray seized every possibility to return to China to continue his studies. A chance visit to the meihuaquan homelands in rural Hebei province, attending performance attended by dozens of teams from across the North China Plain, revealed the profound intersection of martial arts training and community development. 

Fascinated by these rural traditions, Ray undertook research in rural Hebei for a Master’s degree. This only deepened his interest in a fundamental question: Why were hundreds of thousands of people investing tremendous resources and time in studying meihuaquan?  Between 2005 and 2014, Ray returned to China to begin a PhD in Sociology at Peking University, focusing on meihuaquan as intangible cultural heritage and its relationship to enhancing social cohesion. Throughout this period, Ray studied with numerous meihuaquan teachers across rural Hebei province and in Taiwan. In Canada, Ray studies Chen taijiquan from master Ronnie Yee
