Bloodbeat (1983) is one of the strangest yuletide horrors ever created and most definitely the craziest Christmas slasher you've never seen! ;)

The only feature film written, directed, edited and scored by Fabrice-Ange Zaphiratos, a French filmmaker who moved to Wisconsin in the late 70s to a remote farmhouse that inspired the creation of Bloodbeat. Taking advantage of locally growing cannabis in the farmhouse area, Zaphiratos claims smoking the plant helped craft the bizarre story. He continued to partake during the eight weeks of filming, referencing the accelerated heart beat experienced under the influence in the title of the film. A true bricolage, Zaphiratos used many regional elements to forge the frosty tale, including his roommate Helen Benton, a local artist who's paintings have a powerful and even terrifying presence in the film.

Unlike other slasher films of its time, Bloodbeat raises the bar for the inclusion of both baffling and fascinating visual treatments and its experimental and minimalist electronic soundtrack. All created by Zaphiratos himself, the Renaissance man employs vibrant animated effects, duotone negatives, and slow motion with scorched synths, melting drum machines to create a spellbinding experience. The film has been described as oddly captivating, even as the viewer is left stranded at times along the narrative, proving there is brilliance to be found in even the most disperate of elements and offbeat artistic approaches.

Released on VHS in North America in 1985, Bloodbeat was trapped on tape until its 4K restoration in 2017.

TLDR:
