Part of the Publishing Symposium series.

In this "brave new world" of generative AI and other technological advances, publishing scams are on the rise, particularly around "guaranteed publicity" and other big marketing claims.  Jillian Bell from SaskBooks will discuss some of the ways to distinguish between professional publishers (both traditional and hybrid) and fee-for-service vanity presses.  The session will particularly focus on marketing: what a professional marketing cycle looks like, what work a publisher will undertake, and what's expected of authors in this digital age.

Presenter

Jillian Bell is a writer and freelance editor who has been working with the provincial creative industry association for book publishers, SaskBooks, for more than 25 years. Her writing has been published in anthologies, newspapers, magazines, and in syndicated online formats. She has edited gaming books and adventures, as well as manuscripts in many genres (fiction (general fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, adventure, romance), non-fiction, poetry, and children’s picture books). She is also an active musician, an avid gamer, a fibre artist, a painter of teensy things, a learning gardener, an actor, and a voracious reader. Although she does not have a prehensile tail, she still likes to climb things sometimes.


Host

Saskatchewan author Victoria Koops never stopped playing make-believe and often writes while wearing a tiara. Her stories are full of epic adventure and swoony romance and navigate social issues through the power of fandom and geek culture. WHO WE ARE IN REAL LIFE is her award-winning debut novel.

As a practicing counsellor, Victoria lives with her family in Treaty 4 Territory, where she loves to sing off-key, tease her sisters and pretend that she’ll choose a different romance the next time she plays Dragon Age: Inquisition.
