There are 150 residents in Waterloo South, 40 residents in Mascot and residents in Glebe being evicted to sell off their homes and public lands to developers. This will gentrify the inner city and make property investors richer.

Stunning, well-maintained public housing is a solution to the housing crisis. Homes should be for people, not for profit.

The situation is urgent. As rents increase, 65,000 people languish on the waiting list for public housing in NSW. Across the country, 750,000 people need secure housing. 

In the 2023 elections NSW Labor promised to build more public housing and retain public lands. They told Waterloo residents voting for them would “save your homes.” 

This is a war on the poor. The NSW ALP declared they will demolish public housing in Maroubra, South Eveleigh and Kingsford as well. 

We can win. For ten years community organising has stopped the demolition of Waterloo. For two years we’ve staved off the demolition of the Glebe estate. 

The NSW government should immediately repair existing dwellings and build more. Not evict, demolish and destroy public housing communities.
