> What is Court of Conscience?
Court of Conscience is a peer-reviewed, social-justice-focussed, academic journal published annually by the UNSW Law Society. It is run by an entirely student-led editorial team, and consistently attracted submissions from High Court Justices, notable academics, community leaders, legal practitioners, policy advocates and law students alike.
The journal has been named the Australian Law Studentsโ Associationโs โBest Equity Publicationโ (2012โ2016, 2019โ2021, 2023โ2024) and has received the Associationโs Advocacy Award (2024).
> What is this yearโs issue about?
The theme for this yearโs Issue is 'Beyond the Ivory Tower: Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice', which critically examines areas where there is a disconnect between legal theory and the operation of the law.
The issue features an article by Chief Justice French, alongside submissions from notable academics (such as Helen Gibbon, Jill Hunter and Mark Giancaspro) and leading legal educators (such as Dean of UWS Law School Catherine Renshaw).
> What can I expect at the launch?
Professor Justine Nolan will deliver a keynote address on the theme. Professor Nolan is the Director of the Australian Human Rights Institute, and an internationally recognised expert in modern slavery and human rights issues in business. Professor Nolan is a key driver of the Australian and global business and human rights movement, and has advised businesses, civil society, governments and the UN on human rights issues for over 25 years.
