To the Point
Decorah, Iowa. For seventeen-year-old Lori, a runaway from a terrible past, the name itself sounds wonderful—like the name of a Native American princess. But Lori finds that she can’t escape her past, even in Decorah. When she meets twenty-three-year-old Cale, after a mysterious near-drowning incident, Lori begins to learn the healing powers of nature and companionship, and to confront the darkest memories of her past.
A native of Grand Marais, MN, Tom Toftey graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College then earned a Master’s Degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, before teaching high school English and journalism for 11 years. Careers in communications, corporate relations, and qualitative research followed before becoming an author. Tom’s connection to Red Wing is significant– after all, Highway 61 runs between Grand Marais and Red Wing! His wife, Jane Hansen, grew up in Red Wing, the daughter of Reverend Rodney Hansen and Rosamond. Pastor Hansen
served St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for many years. In addition to being a proud member of the Class of 1964, Jane too graduated from Gustavus. Although Toftey wrote newspaper and magazine articles, he never intended to write a book. It just happened.
Toftey’s first book, “Unexpected Gifts,” is a 230-page feel-good nonfiction that has resonated with thousands of readers. Dozens of readers say they read the emotional book in one sitting without getting up. Since publication in March 2024, of 57 ratings on Amazon, 92% have given the book a five-star rating.
