Why it is called Oktoberfest when it happens in September

A horse race on a Munich meadow in 1810, watched by a royal couple and a cheering crowd

Why is Oktoberfest in September? Because Munich moved it there. The original was a wedding celebration in October 1810 for Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese, finished off with a horse race on 17 October. The festival grew year on year and its dates crept forward to catch late-September weather, so today only its final days fall in the month it is named after.
