This session will give an up-to-date picture of how the technology is impacting creative media. It examines the public controversies from the use of AI in the Oscar-winning film, 'The Brutalist' to the forthcoming performance by an AI-resurrected Val Kilmer in a movie after his death.The session centres on two key questions:Should AI be used in the creation of the movies and TV programmes that we watch?How do we as audiences respond to films if they have incorporated AI into their production?Why you should come and what you will learn?Join a discussion and contribute your voice to the big questions:Should AI be outlawed in film and media?Are there ways in which the technology can be used ethically?What are the responsibilities of filmmakers when using AI?How do we value films that have been created using AI Tools?Whether you are an AI-sceptic or a tech enthusiast, this session will help you develop your response to media content in the AI era.About our speakerDr Dominic Lees - Associate Professor in Filmmaking, PhD, SFHEADominic Lees is an award-winning film and television drama director and is Associate Professor in Filmmaking at the University of Reading, UK. He leads the Synthetic Media Research Network, a group of creative professionals, AI developers, stakeholders and academic researchers who explore the potential of Generative AI in film. His recent published work has looked at the impact of AI on actors, the use of deepfakes in documentary film production, and the ethical implications of AI technologies. His 2019 experimental work with deepfakes and film drama was groundbreaking and he speaks on the impact of AI on the creative industries across a wide range of international media. Lees is lead writer on AI for the British Film Institute’s Sight and Sound magazine. He has worked as a Specialist Advisor on the film industry for the UK Parliament.A note on the feeEthical Reading is a Community Interest Company (CIC) dedicated to keeping our costs as low as possible.
