Art & astronomy camp featuring art lessons by Sharon Jeffus and astronomy talks by Jay Manifold; weather permitting, solar observation and a tour of the night sky. 

Tue/Wed/Thu 28/29/30 Jul, 9 AM – 2 PM

KC Art Van Gogh

We will have daily relaxing painting lessons on canvas. These paintings will be of nature. One day will focus on the river; one day will focus on flowers, trees and animals; and the final day will focus on the sky and birds. You also have the option of choosing your subject. 

All supplies (canvases, brushes, and good quality paints) will be included. Expect each lesson to last 2–2½ hours. 

Weather permitting, we may begin observing around 8:45 PM each evening in late July. Jay will bring a 6” Newtonian reflector telescope and on clear evenings will be able to see double and multiple stars, open and globular clusters, planetary nebulae, and galaxies. Jay can explain many things in the sky in some detail. During the day, Jay can put a full-aperture solar filter on the telescope for viewing sunspots.

Sharon Jeffus is an artist and art teacher who has been training and mentoring young people in art for over 30 years. She has a B.S.S.E. in Art Education from John Brown University and then became certified to teach English from the University of Arkansas. Sharon studied painting at Metropolitan in Denver and sculpting at Southern Illinois University. She has written over twenty books, available in e-book form and through Rainbow Resources, has three approved AP courses, and is the proprietor of the internationally known company Visual Manna. 

Jay Manifold is a semi-retired project manager who has presented at hundreds of education/public outreach events for the Astronomical Society of Kansas City over the past four decades. He is a former chair of the ASKC’s Education Department and has been a keyholder at Powell Observatory since 2007.
