You're invited to a full day of discovery at the beautiful Tree of Life Farm! Join two of the region's top experts, Courtney Taylor and Sebastian Tabibi, for an immersive six-hour crash course dedicated to teaching you the essentials of Spring foraging in Texas. This event is a unique opportunity to learn from their years of combined experience, as they guide you through the natural world and help you identify and utilize the incredible bounties found growing from the forest floor.
Event Schedule
Foray into the Natural World
11:30 am - Gates Open & Registration: Arrive at the Tree of Life Farm, check in, and get ready for a day of exploration. This is your chance to get settled, grab a map, and meet fellow nature enthusiasts before we begin.
12:00 pm - Welcome Orientation: Gather for a warm welcome and a comprehensive overview of the day's activities. We will highlight what you can expect from our two renowned experts and set the stage for our journey into the forest.
12:30 pm - 3:00 pm Morning Foray & Ecological Walkthrough: Led by Courtney, with support from Sebastian, this guided walk will be your first hands-on experience. We'll delve into the forest, highlighting how to begin identifying both plants and mushrooms. Our guides will discuss the specific ecological roles of each species, their potential uses, medicinal benefits, and, most importantly, how to distinguish between edible and toxic varieties specific to Spring in Texas.
Afternoon: Practical Skills & Knowledge
3:00 pm - 3:15 pm - Intermission: Take a well-deserved break to refresh, rehydrate, and discuss your initial discoveries with the group.
3:15 pm - 4:00 pm - Presentation: “Identifying Common Edible & Toxic Mushrooms in Texas (Spring Season)": Return to the main area for a focused PowerPoint presentation by Sebastian. This session will provide essential knowledge on the key features of common edible and toxic mushrooms found in the Texas region during the Spring, equipping you with critical identification skills.
4:00 pm - 5:30 pm - Evening Foray: With the knowledge from the presentation fresh in your mind, embark on a final foraging opportunity. This evening foray is dedicated to applying the skills you've learned, offering a hands-on experience to solidify your confidence and prepare you to begin your Spring foraging journey.
Evening: Community & Celebration
5:30 pm - 6:00 pm - Final Specimen Discussion & Walkthrough: Join our experts for a culminating discussion of the day's discoveries. Courtney will detail the specific plants and trees we encountered, while Sebastian will delve into the various roles fungi play in the ecosystem and their potential for personal use.
6:00 pm onwards - Evening Potluck & Community Drum Circle: The formal event concludes, but you are invited to stick around for an evening potluck and drum circle. We encourage you to bring a vegetarian or vegan dish to share as we gather around a campfire to connect, share stories, and make music well into the evening.
