The LGBTQIA Clinical Learning Series is a 3-hour training designed to provide information about working with people from sexual and gender minority groups, including those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA).
When you think about working with them as clients, questions may come up for you like:
Am I qualified to work with this population?
Do I need special training?
What if I say something wrong or don’t understand their sexual or gender experience?
Should I refer to another therapist?
If I do need to refer out, who can I refer to?
These are all legitimate concerns. Many counseling, clinical, and social work programs barely touch on LGBTQ+ issues, let alone provide explicit training or classes. I’m Dr. Irene Summers Temple. I am a licensed psychologist in Rapid City, SD. I have extensive experience and training in working with LGBTQ+ clinical populations. I provide trainings and presentations on understanding gender and sexual diversity. I want to share this knowledge with you.
Don't avoid working with members of the LGBTQ+ community because you don't feel competent. Don't unintentionally do harm because you were not adequately trained to work with a unique population.
My trainings are specialized for mental health and medical providers. The LGBTQIA Clinical Learning Series will help you:
Feel confident in addressing the needs of your LGBTQ clients.
Understand and learn to appropriately use terminology.
Repair the relationship after missteps and mistakes.
Identify when to refer to a more appropriate provider.
Build a network of local and national resources.
In Session 4: Supporting Family Members of LGBT Individuals participants will learn how to:
Help parents understand gender and sexual diversity
Teach parents about how to support their LGBT children
Provide local and national resources to families of LGBT children
Support children and spouses of LGBT adults
Learn how to work with families that desire a treatment that is unethical
This is an approved CEU training for Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Social Workers. A Certificate of Completion with the South Dakota Board of Examiners course number will be provided upon completion of each session of the LGBTQIA Clinical Learning Series.
